Each of my previous series began with a concrete idea. The paintings depict something nameable. As the series moves forward and I shed what I no longer need, the work moves closer to abstraction.
This latest body of work is the first that began with abstraction. I am extracting elements from several previous series, and allowing them to develop into a language that is new. It is within the confines of this language that my focus on light, color, atmosphere, surface, space, pattern and structure can evolve. Instead of shedding what I no longer need, I find my language growing; the patterns change, marks are altered, the paint becomes too tight, then just drips, the palette is modified. Every adjustment is a revelation.
The paintings themselves are rooted in the natural world and often allude to some geological, biological, or astronomical phenomena. There is something very large or very small taking place and for now I don’t pretend to know. The most exciting time in a series is the middle. I follow the progress of the paintings devoid of the hesitation that comes with beginning or ending a series. That is where this work is now. The foundation is secure, and it can only continue to grow.

"Moving Beyond the Canvas with Wax and Wire"
Saturday April 14, 2012, 10am - 4pm
$120 class fee ($20 kit fee)
8 students max/4 student minimum
In an expanded version of her popular "Wax and Wire Adornment" class, artist Crystal Neubauer is offering a unique opportunity for the participant to work with Encaustic Wax in sculptural or 3D form and take their encaustic work "Beyond the Canvas".
Participants will start with the basics of creating wire frames or armatures as a foundation for uniquely personal one-of a-kind sculpture, wearable adornments, or embellishments for larger works. Metalsmithing techniques will be demonstrated for the student who wishes to create a pendant or pinback frame to allow their creation to be worn as jewelry. Moving from wire into the basics of treating personal ephemera, found papers, or textiles with encaustic wax, students will then learn to attach these treated elements to the wire foundation for a unique marriage of materials. Examples of Crystal's own Wax & Wire jewelry can be viewed at this link: |

Monoprints and Sgraffitto: Press-less Printing for Painters
Sunday, May 20 -10:30am - 3pm
Cost $75
Monoprinting is a direct way of painting on a surface and then printing for spontaneous effects: Sgraffitto means to carve or scratch into a surface to reveal underneath- like a more flexible scratchboard with the feel of an etching.
Using the new Golden “open”, (provided for you), a paint with a slow dry time and rich transparencies, we will develop a series of imaginative, painterly, one of a kind prints suitable for framing.
